In August 2003 David Kimani and seven children from the Juhudi Club visited London in order to collaborate with Mr. Anderson on the construction of a new mosaic mural in the garden of the children's ward of The Royal London Hospital , Whitechapel, London.
They were supported by Ginny Carvisiglia of Vital Arts (a London-based organisation dedicated to the promotion of art in hospitals). This was phase two of the ongoing Anglo-Kenyan mosaic project (Stage one took place in Autumn 2002; when Jim Anderson travelled to Kenya to work on the mosaics in Gertrude's Garden Children's Hospital, Nairobi; and it is hoped that phase three will be undertaken this Autumn, when Jim will return to Kenya to work on a series of mosaics in the Jomo Kenyatta Hospital).
Funding for the children's stay in London was obtained from a private benefactor, and sources in Kenya subsidised their travel. The mural itself was made from recycled ceramic fragments and pieces of mirror, plus tiles provided by Intertiles ( Balls Pond Road , London ). It measures 6ft. x 14ft., and the theme - following a motif already established in the children's ward - is "The Sea". The aims of the project are fivefold:
